'Face to Face with Science'
An original installation devised and constructed by Caroline E Cross, Diana Hill and Rachel Liddle, 2003 (printed texts on card 1200 x 800mm) . Animated by Lucia Ricci 2007. All rights reserved.
‘Face to Face with Science' came to life in the refectory at Imperial College, London in 2003. As part of the masters in science communication, we had been charged with devising a piece of art to express the essence of science communication. After an almost lethal dose of caffeine, inspiration came to me in the form of a lithograph by Salvador Dali, Lincoln in Dalivision, which I recalled from a visit to the Dali Museum in Figueres.
We constructed an iconic image of Einstein using snippets of scientific texts cut from magazines, grant reviews and lab books. The installation aims to reflect the relationship between contemporary science and people’s perception of science and also represents the paradigm shifts that can occur in science, described by Thomas Kuhn, philosopher of science.
